How To Prepare Saffron

How To Prepare Saffron

Here are the best ways to prepare saffron so you get its full colour, aroma, and flavour

1) Blooming saffron

This is the traditional and most effective method.

You need:

  • 5–10 saffron threads

  • 2–3 tablespoons hot (not boiling) water or milk

Steps:

  1. Lightly crush saffron threads using a mortar.

  2. Add hot water or warm milk.

  3. Cover and let it steep for 10–20 minutes.

  4. The liquid will turn deep golden-red.

  5. Use this infused liquid in your dish.

✅ Best for rice, desserts, tea, stews

2) Using the ice method (Persian style)

This gives a very strong color.

Steps:

  1. Crush saffron threads.

  2. Put a few ice cubes on top.

  3. Let ice melt slowly (15–30 minutes).

  4. You’ll get very concentrated saffron water.

3) Direct use

You can add whole threads directly to food, but:

  • Color will be weaker

  • Flavor less even

Tips for best results

✔ Always crush before soaking
✔ Never boil saffron (kills aroma)
✔ Use a glass or ceramic container
✔ Store saffron in an airtight container, and a cold, dry and dark place

Amount guide

  • Rice for 4 people → 10–15 threads

  • Tea (1 cup) → 3–5 threads

  • Desserts → 5–8 threads
